Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated at Devikulam taluk of Idukki district Kerala. It is a well-known reserve that stretches over an area of more than 90 sq km. This wildlife reserve was given the recognition of wildlife sanctuary in 1984. This beautiful sanctuary is located in the leeward side of the Western Ghats. And it is the due consequence of this that Chinnar gets 48 rainy days in a year in the months of October and November when Northeast monsoons hover. 
Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary laps variety of trees. It boasts of exotic thorny scrub forest with xerophytic species. In this sanctuary dry and deciduous forest, thorny scrub forests, high Sholas and wet grasslands abound. Among an array of the species of flora you can see Acacia arabica or Karivelam, Acacia leucofolia or Velvelam, Santalum album or Chandanam, Anogeissuslatifolia or Mazhukanjiram, Elaeocarpus recurvatus or Bhadraksham and Strobilanthus kunthianus or Neelakurinji.
Apart from the exotic flora, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary also houses endangered giant grizzled squirrel. It is a shelter to tigers, elephant, bonnet macaques, gaur, Kraits, spotted deer, spectacled cobras, sambar, turtles, vipers, little cormorants, darters and black eagles.
