Muria Tribals
Introduction
Murias are another sub caste of Gonds tribes found in Bastar district.They live in the Narayanpur and Kondagaon Tehsils of Bastar district.
Unlike Abhuj Marias who live in dense forests,the Murias live in Plains and are a lot more developed in comparison to the primitive Abhuj Marias.
The economy of the Murias is based on agriculture and collection of the forest produce.Rice growing is common.Minor Forest Produce is consumed as well as sold also.
There are several totems and several gods of villages and tribal sub-groups. Murias have their own superstitious and sorcery practises.There is no functional division of castes ie Barbers, Cobblers, Weavers or Washermen. The tribals of this area have their own socio-legal hierarchy of tribal administration. Murias have started practising sedantary cultivation also.
The Murias prefer ' Mahua' drinks rather than medicines for their ailments.The tribals of this area is famous for their 'Ghotuls' where the prospective couples do the 'dating' and have free sex also.
