Rajasthan Nagaur
Nagaur is a historical town that houses an ancient fort, many palaces and shrines. Nagaur is far- famed for its colorful and one of the biggest cattle fairs that are held in the state.
The farming Jats and Bishnoi community mainly inhabit this place. Nagaur has a rustic charm of its own and the sight of red chillies being dried in extensive fields is very pleasing for the beholder.
This Eight days fair held every year during the month of Jan-Feb, is popularly known as the Cattle fair and is the second largest in Rajasthan. Nagaur Town is the most picturesque of Rajput townships. Nagaur is a sea of animals, trading over 70,000 bullocks, camels and horses every year.
The bullocks are known for their fleetness. Not only are the animals lavishly decorated, even their owners flaunt wearing colourful turbans and long moustaches.
Sports like tug-of-war, camel races, bullock races and cock fights; jugglers; puppeteers, story-tellers; and exciting campfire evenings are held to entertain the tourists.
Folk music of the Jodhpur variation echoes the tranquil desert sand. Nagaur is well connected to the major cities by road and rail. Nearest airport is Jodhpur, some 135kms away.
Shearing sheep, handsome marwari horses to spices all compiled in one fair. Attractions include the mirchi bazaar (largest red-chilly market of India), wooden items, iron-crafts and camel leather accessories.
Location
About 247 kms from Jaipur, Nagaur is centrally situated in Rajasthan. It shares its border with several other districts in the state. Bikaner and Churu in the north, Sikar and Jaipur in the east, Ajmer and Pali in the south and Jodhpur in the west are Nagaur's neighbors.
Best time to visit The best time visit Nagaur is during January and February when the yearly cattle fair is held.
Places To See Nagaur
1. Nagaur Fort
Nagaur houses the famous ancient sandstone fort that was built in the2nd century. This fort encloses water reservoirs, old palaces and small temples and other slightly ruined edifices. The extra-ordinary paintings in its walls are a connoisseur's delight.
2. Tarkeen Dargah
This Muslim shrine is dedicated to Hamiduddin Nagauri, the disciple of the Khwaja of Ajmer. This shrine is a holy place of pilgrimage for the Muslims and Sufis.
3. Glass Jain Temple
This famous Jain Temple exquisitely carved out of glass and is considered sacred by the Jain community.
Another magnificent structure that is worth visiting is Amar Singh Rathore Ki Chhatri.
