Mahabalipuram Tourism
The Temple City, Mahabalipuram, lies some 60 kms far from the metropolitan city of Chennai, India. The place is abutted by Bay of Bengal and falls in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. With a coastline spread over more than 20 kms, Mahabalipuram is known for its golden sandy beaches which invite large number of tourists throughout the year. Attractions :
There are several magnificent historical monuments near the beach which are major source of tourist attraction.
1. Shore Temple
Built during 8th century by the rulers of Pallava dynasty, it is an excellent example of Dravidian style architecture. It has two rock cut shrines facing east and west. One dedicated to Lord Shiva and other to Lord Vishnu.
2. Arjuna's Penance
This 26 meters long and 9 meters high structure is one of the most interesting sights near the beach, this is the largest and finest rock carvings in India.
3. Rathas
Also known as Panch Pandavs Rathas, these are five temples dedicated to heroes of the epic Mahabharata. The Rathas with their Gopurams, multi pillared and sculptured walls represents models of different kinds of temples of Dravidian style architecture.
3. Crocodile Farm
Located 14 km north of Mahabalipuram, this farm is home to around 1000 crocodiles of six species. The visiting time is from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm.
4. Tiger caves
This monument was an open-air theater, where cultural programmes were held. Its proximity to the sea makes it a major tourist place.
5. Mandapam
There are eight rock cut mandapas, situated within a radius of one km and are known for their design and execution.

Daily bus services links the city with Pondicherry, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu and Chennai. Taxis are also available from all these places.
