Uttaranchal - Welcome to the
land of lakes and waterfalls. It is one place where you will not have much trouble spotting the scenic beauty, its there in front of you , plain and abundant.Tucked away in the ranges of Himalayas are its lakes and waterfalls. The waterfalls with cascading water and lakes reflecting clear pictures of the beautiful surroundings, all these lend Uttaranchal its beauty. Everywhere you look, each view is better then the previous one and your eyes just can't seem to have enough.
Devaria Tal
A diameter of about 700 m makes Devaria one of the prominent lakes of Uttarakhand. It is located on the Chamoli-Ukhimath route, and is surrounded with forests.The reflection of the imposing Chaukhamba peak in the blue waters of the Devaria presents an exhilarating sight.
KedarTal
Kedar Tal is the source of the Kedar Ganga River. A trek over a rugged mountain trail leads one to the Kedar Tal; the spectacular and enchanting lake situated 18 km. from Gangotri.The difficult trek to the Kedar can pose a challenge to the sturdiest of trekkers.There is no facility of any kind on the way and one has to make all arrangements in advance.A local guide is a must. However, the crystal clear waters of the lake in the backdrop of the imposing Thalaiyasagar peak make the challenge worthwhile. Visitors should ideally go to this spot between June to October.The place is about 4600 m. above the sea level and is the base camp of trekking to the Thalaiyasagar, Jogin, Bhrigupanth and other peaks.
Naini Lake
Located in the heart of hill station Nainital, Naini Lake offers boating facilities on its emerald waters. Boat Club provides strip-sailed yachts with professional yachtsmen to do the sailing.One can also enjoy horse riding on the tree-shaded bridle path around the lake.Legend has it that while Lord Shiva was carrying the body of his consort Sati, who jumped into the sacrificial fire or havankund which was organised by her father Daksha Prajapati, her (Sati's) eyes dropped out at this place and hence it came to be known as Naini Lake.
Dodital Lake
Situated at an altitude of 3024 m, Dodital Trekking Holidays makes an excellent trek to Dodital Lake, that lies between the Yamunotri and Gangotri mountain ranges, and is home to some of the most exotic fishes including the Himalayan golden trout.The lake is surrounded by beautiful pine and oak forests, rhododendron clusters, and has a large variety of Himalayan birds.
Dodital Lake is the source of the River Asi Ganga that merges with the River Bhagirathi near Gangotri. For a fine view of the magnificent Bandarpoonch peak (6387m), you could climb up a little from the lake.A further climb also leads to Hanumanchatti (2400m), the roadhead to Yamunotri (30km), through the Aineha pass (3667m), and offers some of the best views of the Himalayas.
Khurpatal
A real paradise for anglers, the lake is inhabited by numerous fishes. It is 10 km from Nainital and is surrounded by green terraced fields.
Naukuchia
24 km from Nainital, It is the deepest and by far the most picturesque lake in the Kumaon region and derives its name from the nine corners which come together to form it. It is a tranquil, pleasant expanse of water, reflected green by the low, wooded hills cradling it and surrounded by the 70 acres of predominantly oak forests which, after the monsoons, show the innumerable hues of the Himalayan forests. Situated at an altitude of 1219 m., the lake is ideal for fishing and watching migratory bird
Bhimtal
Twenty five kilometres from Nainitral, Bhimtal is much more clearer and pristine then Nainital. At a height of 1200 meters, Bhimtal gets slightly warmer in summers (June ) but nonetheless makes a great round the year vacation spot. Spreading over 1701 m by 265 m, it is the largest lake in the Nainital district. There is an island in the center of the lake, where there is a restaurant also. Some ducks have made the lake their home and they blend perfectly with the scenic beauty. You could go for boating here or explore the forests nearby. There are also other sightseeng options like the Victorian Dam, terraced gardens around the lake. A Bhimkeshwar temple nearby, the Museum of Folk Culture and many other such interesting sightseeing options make Bhimtal a good vacation spot.
Sat Tal
On route to Gangotri and 74 kilometers from Uttarkashi is Sat Tal or the seven lakes. These seven interconnecting lakes form one of the most picturesque scenes you will find in Uttaranchal. At an altitude of 1370 meters clustered among the oak forests, Sat tal is a must visit destination. On approaching Sat Tal, the first lake to welcome you is Nal Damyanti followed by the Panna lake and a little ahead are the three lakes by the names of Ram, Laxman and Sita. The best time to be here is either in the months of March or April when the trees are loaded with lemons and the aroma fills the air or in September to November when the trees start turning rustic spreading a panoramic view across the forests.
