1. Gangotri Temple
The shrine of Gangotri is situated at an elevation of 3200 m amidst charming su
rroundings of deodars and pines.The original temple was constructed by the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa.Every year people from all around the world visit this shrine.A number of ashrams and dharamshalas are located on the other side.It is believed that Raja Bhagirath used to worship Shiva on a slab of rock “Bhagirath Shila” situated near the temple. 3. Shri Haru Temple
This important shrine lies at a distance of 5 kilometers from Bagheswar in Uttaranchal in North India.It is a popular belief that the temple deity grants wishes to all those who pray to the deity with complete devotion. A huge fair is held here every year on the occasion of Vijaya Dashmi.
4. Gauri Udiyar
This sacred site is one place that you must visit during your temple tours to Uttaranchal in North India.This temple is located at a distance of 8 kilometers from Bageshwar and is popular for a large cave that enshrines idols of the Hindu deity Lord Shiva.
5. Kedarnath Temple
The temple of Kedarnath dedicated to Lord Shiva is revered and visited by many pilgrims every year.The temple is situated at an altitude of 3580 m amidst the background of snow covered mountain peaks and greenery.The temple is built of large, heavy and evenly cut grey slabs of stones and is considered more than 1000 years old.The temple has a garbha griha where the conical rock formation is situated and a Mandapam for seating of pilgrims and visitors.A large statue of the Nandi Bull is situated outside the temple door. The nearest bus stop is Gaurikund and pilgrims have to trek 14 kms to reach the temple.
6. Bagnath Temple
Bageshwar gets its name form this ancient temple of Lord Shiva set in the heart of the town.According to popular legend, sage Markandey stayed here and this sacred place was visited by the Hindu deity Lord Shiva in the disguise of a tiger.This sacred shrine was constructed during the reign of the Chand dynasty and according to popular legend absolutely no one could establish the Shivlinga inside the temple sanctum and finally one Manorath Pandey of Palayn village went on penance and succeeded in installing the Shivlinga within the temple sanctum on the festival of Shivratri. Ever since a huge fair is held at this location every year on the festival of Shivratri. Pilgrims from all over the country come to this shrine on temple tours, especially during the festival of Shivratri.
There are a group of temples dedicated to several Hindu deities. The main shrines among them are the Hanuman temple, Kalika temple, Panchnam Junakhara, Thingal Bhairav temple and the Vaneswar temple.
7. Badrinath Temple
Badrinath Temple is the abode
of Lord Vishnu. It is situated at an altitude of 3130 m at the banks of Alaknanda.
At the backdrop is the NeelKanth mountain peak situated between twin peaks named Nar and Narayan.The name of the place is derived from wild berries called Badri.Adi Shankarcharya established the idol of Vishnu in the temple, the idol is made of black granite. Near the temple is a hot water sulphur spring known as Tapt Kund.
8. Yumunotri Temple
Yamunotri Temple lies in the western region of Garhwal Himalayas. It is situated at a height of 3235m.Goddess Yamuna the river goddess is worshipped here and has special significance in Hindu scriptures. The idol is made of black marble.The river Yamuna emerges from Yamunotri glacier which is at a height of 4420 m near the Kalind mountain. This place was the home of Sage Asit.The temple was constructed by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal.A hot sulphur spring pond is situated at Yamunotri close to the temple. Devotees cook potato and
rice at this pond and offer to the Goddess.
9. Har Ki Pauri
This is the most famous ghat where people come to take a dip in the holy Ganga. This is considered to be the most auspicious place and lakhs and lakhs of people throng this place during the Kumbha and Ardhkumbha here. One can see the varied colours of hiliness here, the flea shops, the sadhus with long hairs and bodies smeared with ashes. This age old ghat was built by King Vikramaditya in the memory of his brother Bhatrihari. The best time to visit Har Ki pauri is at the time of evening aarti, when the waters shimmer with the 4h golden reflection of burning lamps floated in water by pilgrims.
10. Gauri Kund
This temple at a height of 6500 lies enroute to Kedarnath. It also serves as the base camp for trekking to Kedarnath. It is believed that at this place, goddess Parvati carried out her yogic practices to appease Lord Shiva.A temple dedicated to her and hot water spring here called Gauri kund is the center of attraction. Goddess Parvati's other name is Gauri hence the place came to be known as Gauri Kund.
